Before your first compass

The figures to gather, and where to find them.

Seven figures are enough to build your compass. None of them requires any collection work: they all already exist in documents you produce or receive. Seven of the 27 indicators even fill themselves in.

Allow half an hour to gather them. If a figure is missing, we work without it or estimate it together during the session.

Organised by document, not by indicator

The list follows the order in which you will go looking for the information, not the structure of our indicators. You open a document, note down what it holds, and move to the next one.

1 · Income statement Annual statutory accounts
  • Turnover for the year
  • Operating profit
  • Financial result
2 · Supplier ledger Aged balance or general ledger
  • Supply costs for the year
  • Non-renewable share of those supplies

This is the most rewarding document of the set: it feeds the circularity pillar, where tensions show up first.

3 · Tax return Filed tax return
  • Effective tax rate
4 · Energy bills Electricity, gas, fuel
  • Scope 2 — optional, we can estimate it with you

The only genuinely optional item. Your bills are enough to estimate it.

What we bring Nothing for you to do
  • Inflation for the year and working days
  • Carbon intensity of the power grid
  • Natural hazard indicators for your locations
  • Sector benchmarks for comparison

Seven indicators are filled in this way, from public sources we query for you.

What sharpens the reading If you have it — otherwise we estimate it with you
  • Share of supplies sourced within 250 km
  • Supply volume affected by a shortage
  • Main suppliers and their respective weight
  • Headcount and payroll
  • Durable share of assets, debt and maturities
  • Number of independent sales channels and revenue sources
  • Share of turnover in everyday consumption
  • Customer retention or loyalty rate
  • Site locations and natural hazards in the area

None of these is indispensable. They are orders of magnitude, and an acknowledged estimate is worth more than a precise figure in the wrong place.

One clarification, because it matters. Seven figures are enough to build your compass: the 27 indicators are derived from them, and seven of those fill themselves in. Other operating data — sales channels, customer loyalty, the local share of your supplies — sharpens the reading without being indispensable: we estimate them with you during the session when you do not have them to hand.

Already have these figures to hand?

Then use them straight away: one session of an hour, and you leave with your compass.
